New found (bathroom) FREEDOM!

My little guy started standing to pee, just before turning 3!

I really never thought it would happen. He's been potty trained for almost a year and had been so dependent, never wanting to stand. Tried it for a short while and then decided sitting was best. I had visions of him in the bathroom as a teenager at school, kicking off his underwear and squatting to pee! Or me showing up, helping him unbutton and re-button his pants. LOL!

About 2 months ago, he started showing interest in doing it by himself (still sitting). Let me remind you that he never went to the bathroom at school until April. He never had an accident, but for 7 months he would just hold it until he got home and then finally one day he decided he wanted to go. When they told me, I was so surprised and a little curious as to what sparked his interest.

Not long after he started going in to do his business by himself, he started standing. I think he likes standing better in public restrooms (I don't blame him), but it's mostly because he's scared of when it flushes. :-)

So now, for some time, he's standing. He has good "control," or should I say, as good as any man has. ;-) He announces every time before he goes in "I haf to go pee pee and I wanna stand."

As he approaches 3, I see him becoming more and more independent with little things like that. It makes me sad that he is losing more of his baby-ness, but at the same time, happy he is gaining some independence. And that, in the end, is really what it's all about!

So now he asks to stand

I mentioned yesterday that Lane started standing up to go potty. I think it was Thanskgiving week and I think my brother might have started it, but I could be wrong.

But seriously, let's discuss. First of all, I know boys are supposed to stand, but he's too small to stand on the floor to reach and when he stands on a stool, it's scary. I mean, every time he's standing, I run the risk of getting sprayed! As he's hovering over the toilet, 5 inches too high, I am bracing myself (and laughing hysterically) wondering where the heck it's gonna shoot this time once it starts to flow.

For the most part it hits the back of the bowl, but occasionally it veers to the left or right and gets whatever is in its path-the wall, the garbage can Matt's PJ's that are laying on the floor from the morning. And I just can't seem to control "it" and Lane obviously can't control "it" either. So we're both just standing there, hovering over the toilet and laughing hysterically. He thinks its pretty funny too.

So usually I just plop him seated on the toilet and hope he doesn't say "I wanna stand momma." But there are those times that he does and I don't want to hold him back from doing something that he will eventually be doing in the end. Does anyone have a solution for this? A better "position" perhaps or do I just weather the storm and hope he grows a few more inches soon. :-)

Once Upon a Potty

Photobucket

So I have all these notes in my phone and times and specifics, but really, I'm not gonna bore you! I think Lane is on his way to being potty trained. Here's what we did.

The first few days, I sat him on the potty every 30-60-90 minutes. A little excessive? Yes! But whatev! I gave him lots of juice and fruit and his maximum amount of underwear changes in one day was only 3 pairs...I thought that was pretty good.

Then a few days after that, Matt informed me that we wanted him to be potty trained and not me, so I stopped sitting him and just took visual queues. And then I would ask him...like all the time...and remind him not to go in his undies. He always said "no" when asked. Some were more diligent than others and the not-so-diligent ones I took as "yes" and made him go.

He had 2 poop accidents in his undies. Both of which Matt cleaned up. One I blogged about here. And the other, well, I called my mom to tell her of our PT stories and I had her laughing so hard she was crying as she was relaying the stories to my Dad.

Sunday, I was upstairs getting some pics uploaded and Matt and Lane were chilling downstairs. Yes, it is hard for me to let go of control and put Matt on peep and poop patrol. But I did because "staring at your son's naked-from-the-waist-down body for days upon days gets really exhausting. So I relinquished and sat at the desk and tried to listen to what was going on!

I heard Lane yell "Poop!" and then I heard Matt taking him to the 'baf-room.' Apparently he peed in the toilet and all was good. Then the boys joined me upstairs and we were playing around for a bit. Matt went running downstairs for some reason and all I could here was 'Oh NO!' and then I could hear Matt hopping to the bathroom. When Lane and I went to check things out...we discovered that when Lane yelled "Poop" he actually went "Poop!" on the wood floor right by the stairs. It so conveniently blended right in with the color of our wood floors and Matt's foot found it....ICK!

But we've made progress since then. He has had ZERO accidents and last night, for the first time, yelled "Poop!" and then went to the toilet to poop. Yes! And before bath he said "baf-room" and went to the toilet to pee. Yes! He has been dry for the past couple days from nap and nighttime. Which I didn't expect at all! (I'm still putting him in a diaper for sleep) But he's definitely showing his bladder control. I'm hoping by the time we make the 12 hour trip to IL, next week, he will be good to go!

I bought this potty back in February and he's been sitting on it off and on, but never would go in it. He always wanted to go on the big potty. It was fine with me...it also doubles as a step stool that we use so he can reach the sink to wash his hands. And the top part comes off so you can set it on the big potty. So it really serves a lot of purposes. Yesterday I asked if he wanted to go on his little potty and he was like 'Shur' and he did. Of course, when the pee hits the toilet it plays a song and he loves it! So now he will go on it too. I think we will be bringing this with us on our car ride to IL.

So there's our progress. Not too bad, but I think it will take a little while longer until I feel really comfortable about it. For now, though, he is doing better than I ever expected!

"Really mom? I just woke up, I'm sitting on the toilet, you wanna take my picture and you want me to smile...here ya go!"

Oh, hi!

Photobucket

Well hello there. I know, it's been a while. But the everyday stuff has been keeping me very busy since we've been back to SC. You know lots of juice and lots of fruit...all the necessities for potty training! We settled in nicely as you know, getting reacquainted back to a family of three, and on Monday went into serious potty training business.

Playing with his water table in his undies. He's wet, but not from pee.

That's been an adventure. The accidents have been minimal, but the obsessiveness (of the momma) is in full force. We've been trying to stay home as much as possible, but it can't totally be avoided.

When we are home, I try to sit him on the potty every 30-60 minutes and it's great, I have complete control. When we're out it's a different story, but as Matt pointed out, its something Lane has to learn to control. I'm pretty sure he was a master at that today. Defnitely seeing progress. It might possibly be due to the fact that yesterday, he wasn't such a master.

Let's just say we had friends in town (more on that later) and we wanted to show them Greenville so we went downtown for a few hours. We stopped at Smoke on the Water for some early evening beverages. We chose the outdoor seating due to the fact that we had a 2 year old and an 8 month old in tow. Everything was all fine and dandy until my super ninja mom skills and that thing called instinct (aka you know your child like the back of your hand) kicked in and I could tell, even in the midst of my story where I wasn't even looking at Lane, that he was up to something. And that something...was filling his pants. I pointed, mid-story, and just knew. Matt scooped him up and ran to the bathroom. Jared looked at me like how in the world did you know what was going on when you weren't even looking at him. Matt returns a few minutes later and discovers Lane didn't pee...nope...he pooped...in his undies.

The story ends with Matt as Dad-of-the-year, a pair of Mater (from Cars) undies thrown in the garbage in the bathroom and a Daddy and Lane emerging from the bathroom as if nothing happened. Same clothes, different undies all the while I got to finish my story. So it was a small set-back.

My husband is so calm, cool and collected. He keeps me sane in my potty training insanity. I'm pretty sure Lane won't be crazy due to the fact that he has his Daddy to balance out his crazy and obsessive momma.

We regrouped today. Have been accident-free. We spent a good 3 hours downtown this morning where Lane downed a whole cup of milk and a whole juice box and still managed to stay dry. I stayed on him and we took turns taking him to the potty, but the little stinker would. not. go....why wouldn't he go? Well apparently he didn't have to. Duh! So he went when he was good and ready. Stayed dry until he had to go and he's pooped and peed on the toilet all day and things are looking up.

Potty training is such a roller coaster. One minute I am jumping for joy at the sight of poop and pee in the toilet and 37 minutes later I am crying in a puddle of pee on the ottoman. But we will persist. I'm hoping my child will be potty trained after all is said and done. (And I won't stay crazy or obsessed, at least about bodily functions) Seriously? Poop and pee make me crazy.

Here's a sneak at our fabulous weekend with the Matheys. We COULD NOT be happier with the fact that seeing them frequently is going to be in our future. They are our dearest friends and live a short 3 hours from us now! Can you tell I'm giddy!

Apprently, I'm not the only giddy one. :-)

So one of these days I will put all the pictures on my computer from the last 3 1/2 weeks and maybe you'll get to see what Lane looks like again...hope he hasn't grown too much since you've last seen him. :-)

All about Daddy...

It's all about Daddy these past few days. I think Lane is scared we are going to be separated from him again.

In the morning, he points to our bedroom and asks "Da-ee?" Nope sorry Lane, he's at work. As soon as we pulled into the parking lot at the hospital for my OB appointment today Lane yelled "Da-EEEEE!!!" He must now associate that we meet Daddy there every time we go. And he was right. When we walked back to the waiting room from my urine specimen (yeah that was an interesting one with a toddler on the loose...story for another time... :-) Matt had arrived and Lane started running toward him with his arms stretched yelling Da-EEEE!!!! He quickly grabbed his hand and lead him to the other side of the waiting room and prompted him to sit down next to him...like 2 peas in a pod, I tell ya!

In other news....
We.......are........potty......training.....

it's not terrible and despite my best efforts to stay home-bound, it just can't happen! Monday we needed groceries after being gone for more than 2 weeks, I had to make a Wal-Mart trip for prescriptions, and today I had a Dr's appt. so like the champ that he is, he just adjusts and uses the potty at the grocery store, Wal-Mart, Dr.'s office, and hospital! :-) So our time away from home has been limited. No accidents while we are out though so far. I don't really know if he's grasping the concept. He sometimes gets on kicks and tells us he has to go, but I really just think it's for an "emmmmmmmm?" (M&M) I really need to get that on video...he has the biggest southern drawl. :-) It's been almost a full 2 days. He had his first accident at 5:30 yesterday and has had 2 more partial ones since then (he caught himself and told me so he was able to finish on the potty)...not bad in my opinion. I'll be back with a complete potty training update...I've been documenting on my phone. Oh and is it wrong that I L.O.V.E my little in his undies...hilarious!
