Beginning of a new life...

He's here! At 11:53 am, McBaby came into the world! The coolest part was the anticipation of everyone in the room waiting to see what was between those legs! Then finally hearing Dr. Metherell say "IT'S A BOY!!" Totally unforgettable!

He came out crying (surprise! surprise!) and sucking and within the hour had a name...Lane after his Grandma Loretta (it's her maiden name) and David after his Papa.

August 2nd 2008...one day that forever changed our lives!

Time to push...

I loooooooved my Dr. I go to a practice with several Dr.'s and whoever is on call is the one to deliver you and luckily I got Dr. Metherell. He is awesome! So calm and peaceful, told me what was going on, didn't yell at me or get excited or force me to do something I wasn't comfortable doing. I am soooo thankful he was on call on August 2nd!

I pushed for 45 minutes....hardest thing I've EVER done in my entire life. I don't know how I did it and when I think about it, I'm scared I won't be able to do it again! I guess that's why we get a 9 month gestation period...to prepare us for the pushing because really at 9 months pregnant...you want the thing out!

At pushing time, I could talk again and the nurses were laughing because they said I was sooo quiet and all the sudden I came to life. I just kept telling them how I wanted a cheeseburger so bad and I couldn't wait to get this over with so I could eat! Leave it to me to be talking about food as I am about to give birth! LOL!

Admitted

It was about 7 am at this point. The ride was AWFUL! We were in Matt's car which is a manual shift and well, it just hurt and plus it felt like it was forever to get there and it's only like 10 minutes away. I had pre-registered at St. Francis so when we walked in they just told me to go upstairs to L&D...no questions asked...just my name, but I'm not really sure they got it...they were just like GO!

Once we checked in upstairs they put me in a room where they check people out before admitting them. I had to do a urine sample...SERIOUSLY!??! Never thought I'd get through that and then I put on a gown. After a few minutes, the nurse came in, checked me, said "Oh my God" and ran to get a wheelchair. Matt went after her and got the details. I was almost dilated to a 7 and they were admitting me and getting prepped. As she wheeled me to my permanent room, she said "You quiet ones always scare me!" And that's exactly what I was...quiet...I know right?!?! I guess I just wanted to be focused on the task at hand and not waste any energy!

Should I stay or should I go?

Matt knew something was up and coming out of his fog of sleepiness, he started to time the contractions again...2 3 2...umm getting a lot closer and he was like we HAVE to get to the hospital. At that point I couldn't think straight. I tried to convince him I wasn't in really active labor and that I didn't want to get there and have them turn me away! Again, I wasn't thinking clearly, I have no idea what I was thinking. He was like absolutely not...let's go.

Silly me, still did not have a hospital bag packed. I mean, I had the baby's outfit and a few toiletries, but no clothes for me. Matt grabbed some comfy cotton capris and a tank top and put on my flip flops and out the door we went. (Good job, by the way, on the outfit, honey!)

Accepting the fact that I was in labor...

I foolishly tried to wake Matt up and see what he thought. Ha! He started to help me time them, but after falling asleep between contractions, he was useless! I really wanted to go through the majority of labor at home so I told him to go back to bed and I got up and went to the living room to find a more comfortable position. I was up, down, sitting, standing, IN EXTREME PAIN and knew I was in labor, but couldn't really admit it! Finally, after finding a more comfortable spot....there was no turning back...

...my comfortable spot was our master bathroom FLOOR. Why is that always the most comfortable spot when you are sick!?!?! Gross, but I found comfort in it at that point. So I went through the rest of the night...from about 3 am to 6 am on the bathroom floor. I think I was there because I thought I was going to be sick so I wanted to stay as close to the bathroom as possible, plus the floor was so nice and cool. Matt finally came in at and was a little alarmed.

The beginning of labor

About 12:15 I shot straight up in bed with what I thought were bad cramps, possibly gas, something was not agreeing with me. I tried to fall back to sleep, but I wasn't too successful. I lie in bed looking at the clock, trying to "time" these cramps. I thought maybe this was it?! No way, I still had a week to go and plus the cramps were not really consistent...they were coming every 15 14 12 16 minutes. I tried to go back to sleep again, but it really wasn't working. At about 1:30 am or so I started to look at the clock again to see if they were consistent again....9 5 7 6 4...ok, they are closer together cramps, but not consistent...but it was harder to focus on the time because the cramps were getting more intense!

Last night out as a kid-free couple...

On this day last year my blood pressure was high. Which was odd because it really hadn't been high AT ALL during my whole pregnancy. I talked to my nonie and my mom and probably my mother-in-law to get their take on what I should do. I took it easy that day and was awoken by a phone call from Matt asking if I wanted to meet some friends at Liberty Tap Room after he was done with work. Since I was feeling somewhat decent and earlier went to Eckerd to check my blood pressure and it checked out fine (a little high but nothing alarming) according to the pharmacist, I figured...why not! This may be the last time we go out as a couple without kids!

I showered and got ready and off we went. We sat outside and it was really really hot. Even though it was early evening, I still remember sweating more than usual and just not feeling normal. McBaby was causing a lot of pressure, more than usual, but wasn't particularly active...not yet anyway! We went about the evening...I drank water like it was going out of style and Matt and I decided on some crab dip for snacking. We filled up and by the time we got home, sleeping sounded much more appealing than eating dinner so to bed we went. I fell asleep on the couch and Matt woke me up at around 11 to come to bed.
